    Competitions

    • Southwest Math Conference Contests – A series of four contests held on Mondays after school at Southwestern Illinois College, these are our first contests of the year, usually in September and October. Three students from each grade level compete.
    • Excellence in Mathematics Contest – This contest is on a Saturday in November at St. Louis Community College in Forest Park. Each school brings 8 students per grade level, and we compete against schools from all over the Metro-East.
    • Math Field Day – Held on a school day in the Spring, mathletes will travel to SIU Carbondale to compete against other southern Illinois schools. Ten students from each grade level compete.
    • American Mathematics Competition – Usually open to only sophomores through seniors, 30 students are chosen to take this test in November at OTHS and results are submitted to the Mathematical Association of America. Students who do very well qualify to sit for the American Invitational Mathematics Exam in March, a very prestigious test that is the qualifying exam for the U.S. Mathematics Olympiad.
    • ICTM Regional and State Mathematics Contest – In these culminating contests of the year, students can compete in the following events:

    Algebra 1

    Geometry

    Algebra 2

    Precalculus

    Junior/Senior 8-person

    Freshman/Sophomore 8-person

    Junior/Senior 2-person

    Freshman/Sophomore 2-person

    Orals

    Calculator Team

    The team first competes in February at the regional contest at SIU Edwardsville.  First place finishes in these events qualify team members for the state math contest, usually the first Saturday in May at the University of Illinois.
